Published in 1925 by Lyon and Carnahan, Publishers. Illustrated with one color plate and numerous text illustrations by Alexander Key. Exterior as shown in photos, light wear.

Small tears at pages 94-95 repaired with archival document tape. No loose or missing pages. This is a rare and lovely collection of American Indian legends spanning many tribes and many states, along with a smattering of early New England and New York folklore passed down by white settlers.

You'll find many legends of Native American heroes, lovers, chiefs, ghosts and witches, totem animals, Indian gods, etc. The tales are delightfully embellished by then nationally-known illustrator Alexander Key, whose pictures exhibit a strong art nouveau influence and help bring the legends to life. As a side note, I have always been fascinated by legends and sightings of monstrous birds -- the Indian name was Thunderbird. This book contains the legend of the Piasa, a bird-like dragon said to have lived atop the limestone bluffs of the Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois.

For many years an ancient Native American mural of the Piasa could be seen on those bluffs -- in fact, Father Marquette described the mural in 1673. Unfortunately the limestone surface where the mural was painted was quarried by the Mississippi Lime Company in 1870. A reproduction of the mural stands near the site today.
