The weave is a clockwise spiral, unusual for Plains Indians - the Pawnee were known to weave their baskets in a clockwise spiral. A tar-like substance, hard not sticky, circles the bottom. The prior owner's tag. When we bought the basket shows handwritten description, including: "Hard-Bundle - single stick closely woven - dark brown".
Appropriate for decorative rather than practical use due to its age - perhaps best as a wall hanging. The basket measures approximately 17" in diameter and 5 1/4" deep.
