These were made through a careful and time consuming process of slowly burning away the interior wood (and probably some exterior) then scraping out the burnt wood, and repeating the process over and over. Eventually the wood was smoothed with a process involving smooth rocks (Ex, small river rocks).
There are some normal irregularities and a couple cracks shown one of which at some point may have had some putty placed in it although not that much is still there (see pictures) and typically cracks such as this dont have a big value impact as they are almost always present.
