Acoma pottery dates back more than 1,000 years. It is particularly well known for fine-line black-on-white pots with distinctive complex geometric designs and traditional abstract symbols. The designs were inspired by ancestral Puebloans - the Membres, Mogollon, and Chacoan.
They are employed along with a combination of life forms in traditional design patterns such as thunderbirds, rainbows, rain, clouds, lightning, and snowflakes. The pots are handcrafted of dense local clay which is considered to be sacred. The clay is strengthened by the addition of pulverized pottery shards, then formed into coils by hand. The coils are shaped into pots and dried.Over the pot a white slip is applied. Patterns are painted using natural mineral paints applied with a brush made of a yucca spike.
Before firing the potter strikes the side of the pot and listens for a ringing sound. If the pot does not ring, it will crack during firing, therefore the piece must be destroyed and ground into shards for future use. Finally, on a day when the weather conditions are just right for firing, the finished pieces are pit-fired. Few will be successfully fired, for some will emerge grey rather than the desired white and some will be cracked.
Therefore, the creation of a single good pot might consume a period as long as two or three weeks! We appreciate your business and thank you for trusting Outback Oz Opal. Outback Oz Opal began as a two-Geologist family unit in the middle of a street in Coober Pedy, South Australia where we bought from a gem cutter some finished Opal stones and rough Opal to cut and sell in the US.We learned so much about grading and cutting from them. Ultimately one miner stored hundreds of pounds of his rough in a SeaLand container on our property to avoid the expense of returning with unsold goods to Australia.
What a dream hobby for two Geologists! But, as is always the case, life happened - a great job opportunity for the Dad in another state and Military service for the Grandson, who had grown up in the business and cut his first Opal fetish when he was in Kindergarten. Thank you for looking at our listings and for placing your trust in Outback Oz Opal.
