This miniature Acoma seed pot pot on offer is a beauty of fine-line black-on-white complex geometric design. It was acquired at the Acoma Pueblo sometime in the early/mid 1990s, date uncertain. The body of the pot is a beauty of fine-line black-on-white complex geometric design. It is in good structural condition, it has no cracks, or repairs.

It shows minor wear on surface deigns, but is in overall good condition appropriate to its vintage age. Any flaws or damage is noted in the listing and shown in the photographs.

The seed pot has been in storage in the family collection, in a pet-free, smoke-free environment. Acoma pottery dates back more than 1,000 years. It is particularly well known for fine-line black-on-white pots with distinctive complex geometric designs and traditional abstract symbols. The designs were inspired by ancestral Puebloans - the Membres, Mogollon, and Chacoan.

They are employed along with a combination of life forms in traditional design patterns such as thunderbirds, rainbows, rain, clouds, lightning, and snowflakes. The pots are handcrafted of dense local clay which is considered to be sacred. The clay is strengthened by the addition of pulverized pottery shards, then formed into coils by hand. The coils are shaped into pots and dried.

Over the pot a white slip is applied. Patterns are painted using natural mineral paints applied with a brush made of a yucca spike.

Before firing the potter strikes the side of the pot and listens for a ringing sound. If the pot does not ring, it will crack during firing, therefore the piece must be destroyed and ground into shards for future use.

Finally, on a day when the weather conditions are just right for firing, the finished pieces are pit-fired. Few will be successfully fired, for some will emerge grey rather than the desired white and some will be cracked.
