This is a listing for a vintage Native American necklace strung with Santo Domingo hand carved Mediterranean coral heishi and accented with hand carved Zuni fetishes. Shell heishi was used between the beads in a warm tone of beige and brown. The coral is high grade, completely natural in a dark shade of tomato red. The carvings appear to be serpentine and/or agate in shades of soft green and dark charcoal black. The beads and the carvings are old. They are strung on beading wire instead of cotton or cording, so have been restrung at some point. The stringing is very well done and the clasp is a traditional sterling hook and eye. The fetishes are primitive animals, perhaps bears, lacking detail and with a definite simple charm.... Like the very early Zuni carvings. The focal pendant is a larger sized tab cut bead carved from the same dark stone as the fetishes. The necklace is 29 inches long and weighs a sturdy 35 grams.
The coral heishi range from 3/8th to almost. Long for heishi, and are 4mm in width. The 2 smallest fetishes are 3/8th by. The last 2 are 11/16th inches both ways. The tab pendant is 1.5 inches long and.
5 inches across the base and just over 3/8th inches thick at the top. There are no sharp edges on any of the carvings and that polished softness adds a great deal of beauty to this necklace.
