Calavaza Sterling snake Turquoise Coral-Bolo tie. This fine very old, heavy sterling silver Bolo tie has me somewhat stumped. I know that Effie and Juan calavaza had 2 daughters with the initial G so it's obvious that this was made by one of them. However, this Bolo is one of the best crafted calavaza pieces of jewelry I have seen. Additionally, it's very old. So my thinking is, it must be one of the first pieces her eldest daughter made. Effie and Juan may have made it (mostly) but stamped it G. The turquoise is magnificent and natural. The coral is of high caliber as well. I'm going to give this piece a date of around 1960-65. It's heavy gauge sterling.

Effie calavaza began making jewelry in the mid-1950s after learning jewelry making from her husband, Juan Calavaza. Her daughters, Georgiana Yatsattie, Gloria Jean Garcia, and Susie Calavaza, are all jewelers as well. One other note to mention. I got this at an antique shop in Leadville, CO.

The lady who's booth I got it from was around 70 and it was owned by her dad. This item is in the category "Jewelry & Watches\Ethnic, Regional & Tribal\Necklaces & Pendants".
